Porcelain Veneers

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers completely cover the visible surface of a tooth and give the teeth a new appearance.  They are bonded on teeth in order to cover up minor misalignments, and discoloration and can change the shape and size of teeth.  Porcelain veneers restore worn down or chipped front teeth back to their original size and shape, or to a new desired size and shape.  A typical smile makeover consists of 4, 6 or 8 porcelain veneers on the upper front teeth.

How Do Porcelain Veneers Work?

A dental veneer recreates the outer layer of a tooth.  Your dentist prepares the tooth by removing some enamel to make room for the thickness of the porcelain veneer.  The amount of enamel removed is determined by how big of a change the porcelain veneers are making to a tooth.  A big change in color or position requires more porcelain, and therefore, it requires the removal of more enamel.

Our skilled dentist makes the porcelain veneers in our dental lab from an exact model of your prepared teeth.  During this process, you wear a set of provisional veneers that are temporarily attached to your teeth.  This provisional period lasts several days or a few weeks for you to test-drive your new smile!

When you return for the final placement of the veneers, your dentist removes the provisional temporary veneers, cleans the teeth, and permanently attaches the individual porcelain veneers to each tooth.  Then you are ready to show off your beautiful new smile!

There are some post-operative precautions you need to take with porcelain veneers, such as not using your front teeth for anything besides chewing and wearing a nightguard if you clench or grind your teeth.

At Dominion Dental Spa, we do not treat every patient the same.  We listen to your individual cosmetic goals, discuss treatment options and provide you with the information to make the best decisions.  Together we can achieve beautiful, conservative and long-lasting results that can be truly stunning.

White Fillings

At Dominion Dental Spa, we use tooth-colored dental composite filling material. Composite filling material comes in a wide variety of colors, so our fillings are virtually invisible and matched to your smile.

Everybody eats food and every time you consume carbohydrates the bacteria that are normally found in the mouth metabolize these sugars into acid.  This acid over time can lead to demineralization (weakening of the tooth), and tooth decay or cavities.

Tooth-colored fillings are a solution to treat cavities and replace old, broken-down fillings. This allows us to replace unsightly metal fillings or discolored or dark tooth decay with the most cosmetic dental material available.

Cosmetic Bonding

A tooth-colored filling may be used to fix minor chips on teeth, minor rotations of teeth, a gap between the teeth, cracked teeth or fix short teeth.  Cosmetic bonding or dental bonding can work if there is plenty of good natural tooth to work with and you have regular bite forces.

Tooth-colored filling can also be placed to cover areas of the tooth were you have mild recession of the gums and might have notches at the gemlike or abfractions on the teeth.

Cosmetic Crown Lengthening (Gummy Smile Treatment)

What is a "gummy smile"?

Most patients and dentists agree that when a person smiles and shows over 4mm of gums while they are smiling naturally, then it is perceived as a gummy smile.  Some patients who have a lot of gum covering the tooth may think that their teeth are too short,  and look for veneers as a solution, where in fact the teeth might be perfect in length and simply need periodontal plastic surgery known as esthetic crown lengthening to correct the problem. Sometimes this is done at the end of orthodontic treatment.  We can do this in our office with amazing instant results.

Other patients may have severe or extensive wear on their teeth. These people may need a combination of functional crown lengthening, to give more tooth height, combined with dental restorations to stabilize their bite.  This usually takes a few appointments in our office.

There are a number of ways to improve the gummy smile but it depends on the underlying cause. The first step is to get the proper diagnosis with an experienced dentist.  There are a few cases where esthetic crown lengthening is not the best solution.   For example, a patient may have a hyper-mobile upper lip that lifts too high. The treatment for this would be Botox injections (to paralyze the upper muscles).  In other cases the patient may have an over extended upper jaw and will need combined orthognathic surgery and orthodontics.  Such cases will need to be coordinated with a dental specialist who offers these types of solutions.
